My friends always said to me, “You’re overly
optimistic about life. It’s not as beautiful as you
think. It’s full of compromises and adjustments. The
pain and suffering are larger than the pleasure and
happiness. You become what you are destined to become
and have very little real choice in life. Even the
choices you think you are making are controlled by the
environment you are in. Get real, and take off those
rose-colored glasses, because what you perceive about
life and everything in it is just your perception, and
not reality.”
“If we are controlled by our destiny and the
environment, then what’s the difference between us and a
dog on the street?” I would always object with the same
argument. “I don’t think we are as helpless as all of
you say, nor do I have rose-colored glasses to tint my
view of reality. We are, and will always be, the
products of our choices. Yes, I’m optimistic, because I
think we can always shape our destinies and make our
choices with the best of our abilities at any given
moment. Whether the choices we make are right or wrong
will only be known with the passage of time.”
