                   CHAPTER 15

The Truth Club

The idea of the story is based on the idea my friend, Som Ghosh, shared with me.  We were discussing why is it extremely difficult to speak the truth about someone on their face, especially, if you know the person well?  It's also equally difficult for the listener to hear the truth coming from someone you consider a loved one or a friend!

I chose college as the setting of this story because we tend to be more 'idealistic', 'passionate' and more 'open' during those years of our lives.

“Hey guys, this is perfect! You know I’ve been thinking of something for a while, and it has come all together at this very moment. I have an idea…” Zhan started as usual.

“No, father, no!”

“Zhan, you should apply for majors in priesthood next year. You will pass with straight A pluses.”

“No, not priesthood—he should go into politics.”

Everyone commented and started groaning and moaning, as if Zhan was about to torture them. This was not the first time they acted this way when Zhan suggested an idea. It had kind of become a routine, where everyone pretended to push back on Zhan and his ideas but secretly waited for him to share what he had in mind.

Zhan kept quiet and just looked at their faces. He knew that everyone was curious to hear what he had in mind but did not openly admit it.

“If you guys are done with your stupid routine of feigning, I’ll go on…” He waited for a few seconds before continuing, “Can anyone tell me what’s the most difficult thing to do?”

“Getting laid,” Raul chuckled, and everyone joined in.

“It may be for you man, but not for me,” Zhan laughed as he spoke.

They all pitched in their opinions on what they thought was most difficult from their perspective. Zhan noticed that Uzma was silent all this time and looked at her, as if encouraging her to speak up.

“The most difficult thing to do is to speak the truth and listen to the truth about oneself,” Uzma said in a loud enough voice to make sure that everyone heard.
